Its time I write about something that i'm strongly passionate about...
Some one have told me "honestly, when i first met you, i didn't have that much of respect for you as i do now..."
The topic is about images and its so sad and unfortunate that most people dont look beyond the surface...
For example, there's a group of ppl i know freshmen year and all they see and what theys still see when they look at me is a SPECIFIC TYPE thats only into clothes, makeup, shopping, parties, boys and do not bother looking deeper...That saddens and offends me like nothing else...
Certainly the clothes/makeup/fun part is an aspect of me, but what they do not see are my tremendous innate ambitions, my tenacity in times of hardship, my dedication and hardwork towards goals or causes that really matter to me. What would they think if they knew I once beared the responsibility of having my parents incommunicado in Chinese Jail? Having to come to College alone the first year, paying rent/bills/managing the family bank account, etc., having to make new friends, maintaining a GPA and all the while wondering if I might ever see my parents alive again? What would they think if they knew I've actually had 4.0s, I'm an President of an Organization and that I've even worked for a human rights cause that I strongly believed in? Or that I have strong ethics and i am actually a committed girlfriend? Haha i think they'd fall off their chair...
On the other hand in a bigger picture, everyone has bias and I am a culprit as well. If i see someone who's fashionably dressed, who flirts, who acts ditzy, in no way would I have thought he/she was intelligent. But on a personal level, I feel strongly offended by the superficiality of having my natural, silly personality judged as my ultimate maturity and intelligence....
Some other interesting comments:
I remember Alice once told me after Finance "you always act cutsy and girly with him...of course he's not gonna think u're smart...but I know u can do anything u put ur mind to."
My mom once said "your greatest strength in business is that ppl think you're silly and harmless so they wont be wary with you. But underneath is a brain that's always ticking."
yeahhhh i think i just need to don a pair of C.S. glasses...ahhh but then my VANITY gets in the way!!! |
